Mijas Pueblo - Andalucía's prettiest white pueblo?

You find Mijas Pueblo between Málaga and Marbella – a 30 min drive in each direction. This only 20 min from Málaga airport. Mijas Pueblo is the center of the municipality of Mijas. In the province of Málaga and in the region of Andalucía. From Casa Cocoon it is only a 15 min drive to the first of a large number of beaches along the coastline, stretching miles and miles west and east of Fuengirol and the closest town.

In Mijas there are 7 great year-round golf courses and this makes the area particularly attractive for golfers. You’ll easily find many more courses within a short ride by car.

The village’s origins go all the way back to Roman times and was then referred to as Tarnisa. The village was conquered by the Arabs at the beginning of the Moorish invasion in the year 714 and was named Mixa. When the Spanish recaptured the village, the name became Mijas.

The municipality is divided into three separate parts; Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas and La Cala. Mijas Pueblo is located at the foot of “Sierra de Mijas” and is 428 meters above sea level. The city’s location and a great view of the area by the  Mediterranean Sea, gave an enormous strategic advantage to the defense of the area in earlier times.

A wonderful climate – surrounded by beautiful nature

Thanks to its magnificent location, Mijas Pueblo has become a particularly popular place to live. As many as foreigners with 78 different nationalities has settled here.

However, the climate and location are not the only reasons that have created this interest in Mijas Pueblo. Mijas Pueblo is like a living outdoor museum along its streets. The remains of the Arab defensive wall is one example. The bell tower of the “Church of Inmaculada Concepción” and the “Ermita del Calvario” are some others.

Mijas Pueblo is surrounded by mountains known as Sierra de Mijas, which is a natural paradise. History has it that the Virgin Mary revealed herself to two local shepherds; Juan and Asunción. For remembering and honor this great event, they built a small chapel in a large rock and called it “Virgen de la Peña”. A wooden image of this patron saint, which was carved in the year 850, resides here. In the same place, also known as “El Compas”, you will find some of the most spectacular views of.

Enjoy a walk through the "pueblo"

To get to know Mijas Pueblo well, the best thing to do is to take a walk through “El Barrio Santana”. This is the oldest quarter of the village and where Casa Cocoon is situated. You´ll see the typical white washed townhouses with flowerpot walls and wrought iron balconies filled with flowers.

Another walk may start at the famous La plaza de los “Siete Caños”. This is a historically important fountain where the water from the mountains used to flow. As it came through the seven outlets the fountain had, the “Mijeños” gave the surrounding plaza this name. From here you continue to La plaza de la Libertad.  Here is another building of interest which used to be the town hall but is now home to the Museo Popular. Here you will find old tools, implements and machines that the locals used during their daily work as farmers, fishermen and builders. Also a selection of handicrafts made by people from Mijas. However, the local economy is based entirely on tourism. On your walk through the village, you will enjoy a spectacular view of the Mediterranean Sea.
